I am curious to know how other public defender offices are handling digital file storage, both of paper files and video files.  Until a couple of years ago, we were retaining all of our paper files in the basement of our building and disposing of them periodically, while retaining all significant case files.  For the last couple of years, we have started scanning the files and retaining the video files, which now come to us in the extremely time consuming process of downloads from Icrimefighter.  We have very quickly found ourselves out of digital file storage space and would like to hear how you are handling this issue in your respective offices.  Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

    Julie:

The courthouse prepares the paper files for scanning and then they are stored onto a hard drive.  We keep two years of closed files in the office before they are sent out for scanning and storage.
